I'm doing lots of planning ahead, and trying to imagine any and all issue prevention for a backyard lab I would eventually like to set up. This wouldn't be at scale, just personal use.

I would likely be getting a 10 foot tall shed, somewhere around 100 square feet. Neighbors are close, but not right next door, just in the vicinity, maybe 20 feet away on both sides, the back neighbor is not a concern. The shed will eventually be wired for electricity, but will not be able to have running water afaik, still investigating that.

I was thinking, due to proximity of neighbors, that I should have a carbon filter on the fume hood I will build. The design is what is bothering me.

If the shed is 10 feet, I believe that will be enough room for the fume hood, but perhaps not the carbon filter? I would like to have it right about the fume hood, but might have to not do so due to space constraints. Thoughts in this would be nice.

Also, how to make a hole for the fume hood to vent out of is tricky. I'd prefer not to have it be noticeable, disguised or unseen. Not sure how to approach that.

Will also have some sound reduction, aa I'd prefer people to be less able to hear the fume hood and wonder what it is for.

Thoughts on this would be nice.

PolandoEmingarnteNothing wild, just a list of ones I would like.

Meth, MDMA, 2cb, ghb, mephedrone, for sure. Maybe when I get some experience some barbiturates, methaqualone, and some specific opiates, dextromoramide or ketobemidone.

But absolutely the first 5. Nothing really hard, and I'm familiar with all the potential routes, necessary precursors, solvents, reagents, etc for all of these.

The biggest issue u didnt mentioned is the smell. ( and those are verry pungent odors, vinegair, acidic, alcohols)
With just carbon filter, most of the odor will still go outside.
U need 2 systems/ duck systems.
1 that sucks the fume( from reactions) true some DIY maded air purifier, and 1 that sucks cleaned air from DIY kabinet to outside.
u could go like carbonfilter-ductmotor-DIY DIY-motor-extra filter-outside.
remember the more filters,cleaners,accesoires,... attached to 1 motor the more power u will lose ( since more resistence)
DIY: watertank where air go's true, box with charcoal in it,...

I think I understand what you are saying.

Basically, the fan must be strong enough to pull through as much ducting as necessary. And that a two stage filter is necessary, one carbon filter, and one that runs into water.

Do I have that correct?

CryoThiono , but i think u get the idea .(u need 2 fans.)
like u mentioned: 2 stage filtering ( carbon filter intake goes into fan, fan exist is going true a box with water/on the bottom so the air go's into the watter ,is 1 fan)
+ extra fan: intake is cleaned air from waterbox, (so from the box above the water lvl) and the exit is to outside ( +u can add an extra filter maded from carbon plates just before the air go's outside).
u can play with settup and add extra's in between, but this setup is for ME the minimum i must have for an acceptable smell. ( this will lead to an odor wich is not so suspected, the people will think i am doing something welding related or something, since i weld/grind outside)

You can run a hose and extension cord to the building, they can't stop you from doing that easily. 20 feet?! Is damn close there will be noises for sure. If you could tap into the sewer system or a septic tank, run a duct through a water trap all of your smell problems would disappear instantly. Another idea is an incinerator for your smell, pipe the air through a furnace and out the roof

I'm sure since I will be small scale (likely biggest flask will be 2 liter) I can figure out a way to basically run fumes through a series of water traps, I've read about it being done. Perhaps that is the best idea, just run everything through some traps.

Noise wise I'm on top, generally. I' looking at basically thick heavy blankets to deaden sound, that will likely go over foam panels designed to deaden sound. Will probably be a huge pain in the ass to assemble, but prison is worse.

I also think that figuring out how to store chemicals in there would be a good idea, and storage in general. Thinking of getting one or two chest coolers, and setting them up with a thing that will turn on the compressor at set ranges, so it will basically keep chemicals at room temp. People do this same set up but for refrigerator Temps, as chest freezers are much better insulated. Then turn on a plug in ac unit when I need cooling for a reaction, or perhaps do most of my syntheses in milder times, like late spring or early fall, or some like a sandmeyer gaba reaction in winter, so it stays cool.

SOUND you can reduce with egg cartons or pyramid Form matts. Stell you need more than carbon Filter and sightability you need to plan with your building.🤷‍♂️ And try to get a refridgiator or freezer rund about under the condesion point and above the freezing poin from all of your inreadients or use an other fridge for everyone.
