I have been trying to find more information as to why mdma would be purple. There's a few reports on Reddit saying same as you food colouring, other reports are saying it's from a synthesis method coming out of Canada.

I'll be honest once when I was young man many years ago I had mdma which was grey nearly purple looking in the light.

Purple MDMA is very apparent here in Canada. It is often marketed as having extra powers compared to regular MDMA. Usually when you buy MDMA it is "brown sugar" or in pills, so people search out the purple stuff as it is believed to be more pure. I don't believe it is a dye that causes the colour; however I have no evidence for this other than just holding it and seeing it. It does test with reagents and FTIR as genuine MDMA (at least the product I had).
