In case you work the chemist way and use thin layer chromatography to check reaction progress. You will need a very tiny set of samples with the starting aldehyde (which you have) and the styrene as well as 2CHxHCl and the final product. I have a tiny amount of styrene to spare as well as some 2CH x HCl only milligrams are enough, the product I haven’t got to it and it is also illegal so no sending. Normally you TLC sample of reaction mixture alongside ingredients (2CH) which should be converted in the product that appears on the plate intensifying. If new and multiple spots appear on the mixture sample (this one is processed, being a mixture workup in microscale like an eppendorf tube) it’s pretty bad news and since it formed more compounds than the product you must stop and try to purify the product for a sample that you need for comparison. Or maybe you get lucky and P.M. me and I will provide you an excellent prep for the styrene that I wish to post as a thread. Validation from others is precious. Anyway it can be done cheap, easy, fast, high yielding compared to most procedures (the Henry works well)... the point is thaat is super simple to execute. And it’s done with no fancy chemicals.
